Mona and Marilyn are both stuck in unhappy marriages but find joy in the belly-dancing class through which they met and became friends. When a tragic accident kills Mona's mother-in-law and Marilyn loses her job, the two leave Chicago and travel across the country to Santa Fe, New Mexico where Marilyn dreams of winning a spot in an acclaimed dance company. Their journey becomes one of self-discovery which leads them to the importance - and true meaning - of friendship.
