When the Mason family moves to idyllic Palos Verdes, CA, their father Phil loves it but their mother Sandy feels out of place among the fake tans and tennis skirts. Their daughter Medina is a loner and outcast at school, while her charismatic brother Jim is effortlessly popular. Medina and Jim take up surfing, but must first prove their right to share the waves with the tough "bayboys" gang that monopolizes their stretch of beach. When Phil admits he is having an affair, Sandy breaks down. Family members begin to turn against one another. Eventually Medina is forced to face much more than just the waves to save her brother, her family, and her new home.
