Nathalie Emmanuel was born in the village of Southend-on-Sea, Essex in England. Emmanuel was raised by her mother, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, and her half-St. Lucian, half-English father. Emmanuel attended St Hilda's School in Westcliff-on-Sea until she was 11 years old, at which time she transferred to Westcliff High School for Girls. Emmanuel claims her start in the world of drama came because her mother, tiring of Emmanuel's daily tantrums, enrolled her in dancing, acting and singing classes in order to channel some of her daughter's rambunctious energy. She made her stage debut at the age of 10 years old, playing the role of young Nala in a West End Production of "The Lion King." It wasn't until 2006 that Emmanuel made the move to the small screen, when she was cast as Sasha Valentine in the soap opera "Hollyoaks" (Channel 4 1995- ). Emmanuel's character was involved in several racy storylines, including ones focusing on heroin addiction and prostitution. Emmanuel remained on the show until her contract ended in 2010. In 2012 Emmanuel appeared on the BBC 3 documentary "Websex: What's the Harm?" a show that investigated the online sexual behaviors of young people in Britain. In 2013, Emmanuel was cast in the popular series "Game of Thrones" (HBO 2011- ), as Missandei, the translator and ladies maid to Daenerys Targaryen.
